Experimental Simulation of a Haunt Experience and Elicitation of Paroxysmal Electroencephalographic Activity by Transcerebral Complex Magnetic Fields: Induction of a Synthetic “Ghost”?

Abstract: To test the hypothesis that experiences of apparitional phenomena with accompanying fear can be simulated within the laboratory, a 45-yr.-old journalist and professional musician who had experienced a classic haunt four years previously was exposed to 1 microTesla, complex, transcerebral magnetic fields. Within 10 min. after exposure to a frequency-modulated pattern applied over the right hemisphere, the man reported "rushes of fear" that culminated in the experience of an apparition. Concurrent electroencepha… Show more

“…Both simple extremely low frequency magnetic ®elds (ELFMFs, 0±300 Hz) and pulsed low frequency (LF) magnetic ®elds (PEMF, 0± 500 Hz, up to AE 200 mT pk ) have produced a range of behavioral effects in snails, mice, rats, pigeons, and humans [Persinger et al, 1974;Blakemore, 1975;Lohmann and Willows, 1991;Papi et al, 1992;Betancur et al, 1994;Blackman et al, 1995;Del Seppia et al, 1995;Papi et al, 1995;Baker-Price and Persinger, 1996;Thomas et al, 1997;Kavaliers et al, 1998;Persinger et al, 2000]. Studies have indicated that PEMFs containing frequencies of 0±500 Hz and amplitudes of up to AE 200 mT pk Thomas et al, 2000a,b] can alter normal standing balance in humans.…”

“…He found that the temporal lobes of the brain are the source of the most spiritual experiences and other alternate state of consciousness. This Koren helmet is a device to induce altered states of consciousness using weak magnetic signals to direct brain activity that can induce spiritual experiences that helps with transpersonal exploration and transformation of many people that is able to heal because of these transpersonal experiences (Persinger, 2000). It is suggested that altered states of consciousness such as sensed presence and out-of-body experience whether they are produced by magnetic, electric, or other stimulations or circumstances can be most effectively explained as the changes of the relative contents and/or intensities of the test subjects' neural quantum entanglement with their surroundings including possibly spiritual environments or information (Hu and Wu, 2012).…”

“…Many other researchers such as Julian Jaynes [16] as well as Suedfeld and Mocellin [17] have emphasized the importance of "the sensed presence" that can be produced by specific environmental factors or altered states. When we applied physiologically-patterned fields across the temporal lobes such that there was a slight gradient from the right (higher) to the left side a sensed presence was frequently reported [18]. However like the natural or spontaneous occurrences of the sensed presence there were concurrent environmental conditions required to enhance the probability that the experience would be reported.…”
