Experimental Study of a Broadband Parametric Acoustic Array for Sub‐Bottom Profiling in Shallow Water

Abstract: Broadband parametric acoustic arrays appear to offer advantages for shallow water sub-bottom profiling. In this paper, the performance of a broadband parametric acoustic array system was experimentally evaluated. In tank experiments using the nonlinear parabolic wave (KZK) equation, the directivity, source level, parametric acoustic array length, and penetration depth were evaluated. Based on Berktay’s far-field solution, the system’s emission signal was designed. According to sea trials of the broadband param… Show more

“…When the stress on the bottom of the oil tank changes, the measured defect site will generate continuous or discontinuous AE signals. Information about the location of AE signals can be acquired by obtaining the distance and time taken for the signals to reach three or more AE sensors [18][19][20][21][22]. Assuming the signal transmitted from the defect position reaches sensor i after t i , and the transmission speed of sound in the tank bottom plate is v, the following formula can be obtained:…”

“…They present an updated overview of the topic, with a particular section on broadband parametric arrays, for which the nonlinear self-demodulation effect applies to the broadband primary signals. A special interest is drawn on some applications, like sub-bottom profiler and buried targets [20,21], underwater communications and long-range ocean research [22,23]. In 2022, the PAA is used to improve the results obtained in elastographic imaging [24].…”

“…The most mature application of the PAA is the sub-bottom profiler [52][53][54]. Chirp sub-bottom profiler is widely used in the field of traditional acoustic detection [55,56], because Chirp sonar transmits LFM signals with broad bandwidth which carry a lot of information about the submarine stratum.…”
