Experimental Study of Irradiation of Thin Oxide and Mo/Si Multilayers by High Brightness Broadband VUV/UV Radiation and Their Degradation

Abstract: This study discusses the main features of the irradiation of prospective multilayer coatings by VUV/UV radiation from compressed plasma flows. Such radiation is characterized by a broadband spectrum and high brightness fluxes. Oxide and Mo/Si bilayers were used as the basis of the reflective multilayers for the visible and UV ranges. A gas-dynamic response from the irradiated surfaces was studied with schlieren photography. The properties of original and irradiated multilayers were described with ultra violet … Show more

“…The high current emitters based on compressed plasma jets are sources of powerful broadband radiation (with fluxes of ≈10 20 -10 22 photon/s per a single pulse) [1]. Ponderomotive forces lead to formation of a high temperature plasma focus with a brightness temperature of ≈30-100 kK [2].…”

“…The MPC-based emitters have a high efficiency of ≈0.3 [25] and they are suitable as a laboratory tool for experimental studies of material stability under extreme radiation loads with minimal mechanical impacts from plasma. A typical discharge time is about ≈40-50 µs [21].…”

“…The radiation sources, based on a coaxial magnetic plasma compressor (MPC) [19], can obtain ultra-high brightness plasma temperatures of ≥40 kK [20]. Such extreme radiation loads induce evaporation of the coating and the emergence of heat stresses and local defects; they stimulate phase and chemical transformations and other changes in irradiated coatings [21,22]. So, the goals of the present study were an experimental estimation of Al/MgF 2 mirror stability and an understanding of the degradation mechanisms under exposure to powerful and ultra-high-brightness VUV radiation on the surfaces located in the near-field zone of the plasma thruster channel.…”

“…At the same time, data on polymer ablation under such extreme environment are practically absent in the literature. Besides, such studies are further complicated by the complexity of the radiation sources [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ].…”
