Experimental Study of Nuclear Astrophysics with Photon Beams

Abstract: Information on the photonuclear reactions in the energy region below the E1 giant resonances is vital for understanding astrophysical processes relevant to nucleosynthesis. Several topics from recent experimental studies of the photonuclear reactions with a high-quality monochromatic γ-ray beam will be presented.

“…They have been obtained with a quasi-monoenergetic photon beam and a time projection chamber, where a simultaneous measurement of both the 4 He(γ, n) 3 He and 4 He(γ, p) 3 H reactions has been performed. The data in the energy range below 30 MeV, where the large disagreement exist, have been remeasured by the same group, confirming their findings [257]. The latter are, however, in disagreement with previous data from Nilsson et al on the neutron channel [252] (for the total cross section we show them below the three-body disintegration threshold, where σ γ 2σ (γ, n)) and with data from Nakayama et al [251], measured via the 4 He( 7 Li, 7 Be) reaction.…”

“…However, the larger 4 He(γ, p) and 4 He(γ, n) cross sections were found to increase with energy up to 29.8 MeV, giving a GDR shape and position in strong disagreement with numerous previous measurements. The same 4 He photo-disintegration cross sections were later measured again in 2010 by the same group at AIST [57], which confirmed their earlier findings.…”

“…The inclusive cross-section measurement from the 4 He ( 7 Li, 7 Be) reaction also shows a radical departure from the results of the AIST group. Deepening the mystery, the 4 He photo-disintegration cross section was measured again by the same group at AIST, confirming their earlier findings [31]. To clarify the situa-tion, the total (i.e.…”
