Experimental study of PWM strategy effect on acoustic noise generated by inverter‐fed induction machine

Abstract: Summary Three‐phase voltage source inverters (VSIs) provide high‐order harmonic voltages. The feed of a power induction machine by a VSI increases the acoustic noise, which becomes unacceptable especially for applications requiring a moderate level such as electrical traction. It has been found that the noise level depends on the total harmonic distortion of the VSI. Thus, the level of harmonics depends on the pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques used to control the VSI. Several PWM techniques have been dev… Show more

“…Space Vector PWM (SVPWM) technique is the most widely used power supply strategy in variable frequency drives because of its reduced harmonic distortion (THD) [34]. However, one of the main disadvantages of this technique is that harmonics and noise are concentrated around the inverter switching frequency value and its multiples [35,36].…”

“…However, the studies on current harmonics and the vibro-acoustic response are mostly based on continuous pulse-width modulation (CPWM) [17,18], and the characteristic laws of sideband harmonics generated by the DPWM strategies are not yet well studied. The DPWM can significantly improve the inverter efficiency and has been widely applied in high-power voltage source inverters [19,20], but it produces richer sideband harmonic components.…”

“…Torque/speed compatibility with many mechanical loads is a basic feature of the DC motor [1]. At the same time, methods of controlling the main parameters of the DC motor such as speed, torque are simpler and cheaper than controlling the main parameters of other motors [2,3,4]. A DC-DC buck-boost converter is one of the methods used to operate the dc motor [5].…”
