Experimental Study of Surfactant Alkaline Steam Flood Through Vertical Wells

Abstract: TX 75083-3836, U.S.A., fax 01-972-952-9435. AbstractContinued research and field application of steam flooding have confirmed an early conclusion that the process is a powerful method for recovering heavy and intermediate gravity crude oils.

“…Therefore, it can be affirmed that, for the applied conditions, there is a synergy between the steam injection and the surfactant solution. The studies carried out by Shedid and El Abbas also showed an increase in the recovery factor for the injection of surfactant and steam, but in different proportions. The increase reported in their work was a 7% recovery factor over the steam injection method.…”

“…46 This effect can be observed by the displacement power of the oil by the solutions, which is amplified with the increase of the ethoxylation factor. According to Shedid and El Abbas, 31 the surfactant, together with the steam injection, makes it possible to control the mobility of steam. This action is perceived by evaluating the recovery factor that the steam is able to generate after the injection of the surfactant bank, being favored by the increase in the degree of ethoxylation of the surfactant used.…”

“…The displacement results conducted show that the caustic steam flood recovered between 10 to 15 % more of OOIP than conventional steamflood. Shedid and Abbas (2000) conducted flow experiments to study the surfactant alkaline steam flooding process through vertical wells and concluded that addition of surfactant or alkaline to steam drive improves the oil recovery of the process and surfactant steam flood recovers more oil than alkaline steam flood. A new technique for surfactant alkaline steam flooding was proposed which can be applicable to both waterflooded as well as conventional steam projects.…”
