Experimental study of the anti-cancer mechanism of tanshinone IIA against human breast cancer

Abstract: Abstract. Tanshinone IIA is a widely used Chinese herbal medicine isolated from Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza). Recent studies indicate that tanshinone IIA may have antiinflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, as well as cytotoxic activities against multiple human cancer cell lines. This study was performed to determine the anticancer activity of tanshinone IIA on human breast cancer cells in vitro and in vivo and to elucidate the underlying mechanism of this activity. Human breast cancer cell lines (estrogen … Show more

“…The present study provides evidence for the first time that Tan IIA has an anticancer effect on human RCC. A number of studies have demonstrated that Tan IIA is able to reduce cell vitality due to its cytotoxic properties (14). The results of the MTT assay in our study also showed that treatment with Tan IIA resulted in a marked and dose-dependent inhibition of the growth of 786-O cells.…”

“…This is in agreement with other reports (8,10,17,18). It is welldocumented that activation of ER stress activates the upstream element caspase 12, followed by the upregulation of the target protein C/EBP-homologous protein (CHOP; also known as GADD153) (24).…”

“…Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancerrelated death in women worldwide (16). Tan-IIA inhibition of human breast cancer cells is well-documented (8,(17)(18)(19). However, the molecular mechanisms are not understood clearly.…”

“…The cardiovascular and cerebrovascular efficacies of TSA were recognized early in the 1970s, and its sodium sulfonate derivative was marketed in China as a cardiovascular drug in the 1980s. More recently, various other pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammation (Ren et al, 2010), liver-and renal-protective effects (Zhang et al, 2009a), learning and memory improvement (Kim et al, 2009), and particularly its anticancer potential Lu et al, 2009;Shi et al, 2009;Zhang et al, 2009b), have been extensively studied and have attracted much attention from researchers worldwide. Previous reports strongly suggest that TSA is a promising leading compound for novel anticancer and cardiovascular drug development.…”
