Experimental Study on Static and Dynamic Fracture Toughness of Cured Epoxy Resins

Abstract: The paper investigates experimental results of static and dynamic fracture toughness. The three-point bending test and the Charpy pendulum test were performed for two kinds of polymers: Epidian 5 epoxy resin cured with Z1 curing agent and Epidian 53 epoxy resin cured with Z1 curing agent. The comparison between the values of a maximum static and a maximum dynamic force are discussed as well as the values of static and dynamic fracture toughness, with special emphasis on microscopic views of crack propagation.

“…This could be also helpful for selection of proper tools and technological parameters of machining. Experimental methods and equipment used in the paper to determine fracture toughness values have been already successfully applied in the case of other materials [26][27][28].…”

“…This speed corresponds to a force increase of 10 kN per second, which should be similar to the rate of force increase in wishbones during vehicle operation. Obviously, there can be a difference between static and dynamic toughness as seen in [ 32 ], yet for the final project it is more important to be physically accurate with the testing method rather than obtain possibly higher results. The testing setup can be seen in Figure 3 .…”

“…The examination of fracture under dynamic loading was analyzed in the case of engineering materials, like epoxy resins, polyurethane foam materials aluminum alloy, etc. [11][12][13]. In the literature describing the mechanical properties of bones, there are few reports characterizing the behavior of bones under impact loading.…”
