Experimental Tests of Steel Unstiffened Double Side Joints with Flush and Extended End Plate

Abstract: Experimental tests of steel unstiffened double side bolted end-plate joints have been presented. The main aim of the conducted tests was to check the behavior of joints in an accidental situation and possibility of creating secondary mechanism, i.e. catenary action in the scenario of column loss. Two types of end plate joints were tested: flush end-plate (FP) and extended end-plate (EP) with different thickness and different number of bolt rows in each. The tests were carried out on an isolated cross beam-colu… Show more

“…A new ideas for improving the load capacity and rotational capacity of extended bolt end-plate joints under large deformations were presented in [10]. Based on experimental [9] and numerical observations [11] of joint behavior additional elements (Fig. 1) such as additional rings (AR) was proposed to improve structural robustness of steel moment frame.…”

“…The experimental results of two-dimensional frame system of this project were presented in details in [2,3]. To develop further research to mitigate progressive collapse of steel structures, the experimental tests of bolted end-plate joint presented in [4] were carried out. Six of double side beam to column with flush and extended end-plate joints were tested.…”

“…The requirements of the design standards for steel structures are related conditions regarding load-bearing capacity, serviceability, reliability, resistance to exceptional impacts of the natural environment, etc., which are interrelated [3][4][5][6][7]. The important issue is the design and calculation of the joints and nodes of steel bar structures, whose behaviour is often tested in experimental way [8,9]. This is the reason why the shaping of any steel structure should be considered in terms of various aspects, such as the structure's function, safety, applied technology, and material cylindroid shapes are concerned, they are not as popular as the hyperbolic paraboloid ones and they receive little attention in the literature.…”
