Experimental validation of a shape memory alloy retrofitting application

Abstract: Minarets are spread across urban nuclei. Their structural weakness could result in failures with heavy consequences. However, the retrofit solutions are limited due to their simple cantilever scheme. The use of metallic pre-stressed wires/cables is a rather consolidated technique. The use of shape memory alloy (SMA) wires has been recently investigated. In view of such an application, a series of reduced-scale tests was planned and realized. This paper synthesizes the full report on an experimental work perfor… Show more

“…In the earthquake of 2000, the structure showed good hysteretic properties and was not damaged. Similar SMA-based reinforcement cases for ancient buildings are the Badia Fiorentina Bell Tower in Italy and the Sherith Israel building restoration project in San Francisco, USA [ 158 ]. They were not destroyed in subsequent earthquakes and showed good hysteretic properties.…”

“…A chain of numerical tests was undertaken to estimate the efficacy of the constitutive models. AlSaleh et al (2012) experimentally studied the effect of pre-stressed SMA wires on the dynamics of an SDOF SMA oscillator. Free vibration tests were carried out on the oscillator before and after attaching SMA wires.…”

“…Moreover, the self-centering capability can also be enhanced by increasing the initial prestressing of the SMA tendon. The performance of SMA wire or prestressed cable for repairing and retrofitting purpose has been investigated by AlSaleh et al (2012). Recently, Ozbulut et al (2015) studied the cyclic behavior of NiTi PT tendons.…”
