Experimentally validated dynamic results of a relaxation-type quarter car suspension with an adjustable damper

Abstract: Models of varying degree of sophistication are used in vehicle dynamic studies. For ride comfort, Kelvin–Voigt arrangement is preferred and for impact harshness analysis, a relaxation-type suspension model, Zener or Maxwell type is used. The nonconsideration of relaxation-type models in ride comfort studies can result in significant errors for frequencies below ∼30 Hz. The object of the paper is to show the influence of the series stiffness on the effective suspension damping both experimentally and numericall… Show more

“…The parameters used for the analysis are listed in Table 1-2 -the values used are typical, resulting in natural frequencies similar to the ones found on vehicles. The top mount behaviour is used in arriving at stiffness for the component (Thite et al, 2017). The input at the wheel is harmonic unit amplitude displacement, with frequency varying from 0 to 30Hz.…”

“…The design range for the natural frequency of rear suspension of the semi-trailers is 1.70~2.17 Hz [34]. Based on Equations (11) and (12), the proper ranges of spring heights can be derived with different sprung masses [35], and the optimal heights were determined as the medians of the ranges. Therefore, four control heights were set for the air suspension [33], specifically as follows:…”

“…The suspension strut is attached on the unsprung mass and connected with the sprung mass through a damper top mount, which is commonly used in passenger vehicles to enhance the noise-vibration-harshness (NVH) performance. Here we consider the top mount as a linear spring k m and a damper c m based on previous work, such as [22]. The quarter-car parameters used in this study are listed in Table 1.…”
