Experiments with Continuous Hemofiltration and Hemofiltrate Regeneration in the Rat

Abstract: Experimental studies were made with continuous hemofiltration treatment for bilaterally nephrectomized rats and initial observations regarding the effects of such treatment on leukocyte and thrombocyte counts are reported. Hemofiltration of unanesthetized rats able to move freely within their cage could be continued for up to 30 h using a pump-driven ECC system. Blood parameters recorded during this treatment indicate that the detoxification was effective. In another series of experiments the water and electro… Show more

“…The selection of assessment procedures for the preclinical evaluation of various materials and equipment such as hemosorbents and the relationship between such procedures and the intended application can be facilitated by examining designs and procedures based on animal models. Such models were developed for rat (57–61) and rabbit (62). Based on this research, the options for an implantable artificial kidney were investigated and discussed (63–67).…”

“…Making use of the afore-mentioned possibilities, several steps have been made in the development of a wearable artificial kidney during the last few years (Tab. I) (5-13), starting with the development of the WAK-system in the late sixties by Kolff (this system is rather more portable than wearable (5)), and ending with successful attempts of miniaturisation by lssautier (10) and by Murisasco (11), and the development of artificial tubules by Aebisher (12) and Falkenhagen (13).…”
