Expertise in soccer teams: A thematic inquiry into the role of Shared Mental Models within team chemistry

Abstract: Aims:The purpose of the current study was to establish a conceptual framework of team chemistry components in sport with an emphasis on Shared Mental Models (SMM).Method: Elite soccer coaches (n = 6) and players (n = 3) were interviewed using a semistructured interview guide. An inductive thematic analysis was employed to analyze the data. Results: Four themes related to team chemistry components were identified: (1) members' characteristics (i.e., demographic data, on-field characteristics, and member's ego), … Show more

“…The team environment is not limited to the teammates and technical team but also includes the administrators, fans and internal and external media [19]. All of these groups can help a player feel welcomed and increase their confidence which will make the transition easier.…”

“…In this regard, Silva et al (2013) have noted that it is the ability to perceive "collective affordances"or the dynamic relationships among teammates, their opponents, and environmental pressuresthat allows teammates to establish coordination in interactive team tasks. Also noteworthy, within this dynamic systems view, there are scholars who compare TC to "chemical reactions" or "team chemistry" (see DeLong et al, 2011;Gershgoren et al, 2016), thus adding further nomological confusion to research on group dynamics in applied psychology (see Filho, 2015).…”

“…In practice, fostering the development of shared and complementary affective-cognitive-behavioral states and patterns in teams might enhance organization of labor in complex tasks across disciplines (e.g., music, sports, and military). If teammates hold communal and complementary feelings (affective), thoughts (cognitions), and behavioral patterns, coordination losses in team tasks are less likely to happen (Filho, Gershgoren, Basevitch, Schinke, & Tenenbaum, 2014;Gershgoren et al, 2016).…”

“…Under pressure, teams frequently transition to a more implicit type of coordination relying on Shared Mental Models, or a team's shared representation of knowledge (SMM;Entin & Serfaty, 1999). Gershgoren et al (2016) organized SMM into hierarchical levels with situational cognitions being the most specific one. This level was composed of both game intelligence and game plan components, with game intelligence revolving around anticipation skills given present information.…”
