Explaining mobile game takeoff through information configuration

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore how the number and quality of games that publishers have released, popularity of game genre, age rating and package size are configured to determine the mobile game takeoff in a short time.Design/methodology/approachBased on the signaling theory, the authors present a conceptual model. Using actual data about 170 mobile games at their initial stage in the Apple App store, the authors test the conceptual model by applying fuzzy qualitative comparative analysis (fsQ… Show more

“…We employed fsQCA to infer the complex interdependency among app strategic update decisions because of its following three advantages. First, fsQCA is a set-theoretic approach IMDS 124,3 to examine the relationship between combinations of causal conditions and an outcome (Fiss, 2011;Tang and He, 2021). It assumes that an outcome results from interaction rather than independent effects of causal conditions (Misangyi et al, 2017).…”

“…A variance model with independent and dependent variables is unlikely to produce a holistic view of the interdependency among app strategic update decisions because the interdependency can be more complex than two-way or three-way interaction effects in a variance model (Tang and He, 2021). We, therefore, choose a modeling approach suitable for analyzing complex interdependency in strategy – the landscape search model explained below.…”
