“…However, the design of effective policies to reduce illegal bushmeat hunting require information about the importance of bushmeat in household economies (Knapp et al, 2017). Wildlife hunted for human consumption is a valuable ecosystem service particularly to the poor who otherwise see few benefits from protected areas (Coad et al, 2010;Schulte-Herbrüggen et al, 2013;Fischer et al, 2014). Quantifying the value of this ecosystem service is important to predict the consequences of enhanced enforcement, reducing the availability of this resource to local people (Golden et al, 2014).…”

“…Game theoretic models (Haskell et al 2014) and community interviews (Fischer et al 2014;Harrison et al 2015) suggest deterrence has a key role in determining law-enforcement efficiency. Empirical data on deterrence is rare, although a recent study suggests deterrence effects resulted in lower poaching levels (Linkie et al 2015).…”

“…Despite the efforts employed by the Park management and other conservation stakeholders in preventing snares and snaring, including the establishment of the special unit for de-snaring (Serengeti De-Snaring Program), the problem is still rife. This may be the result of a range of factors, including the failure of community-based conservation approaches (as little benefit flows from the Park to local communities), patrol effort (such as time spent, areas covered and visited during the patrols), an increase in campsites within the Park (making illegal bush meat hunters feel more secure and confident when deploying wire snares), casual laborers employed in short-term development activities, such as infrastructure construction and maintenance within the Park, bush meat preference (bush meat is preferred to livestock meat) and the nature of the tribes bordering Serengeti National Park; however, the precise causes have not been researched (see Fischer et al, 2014). Although there are difficulties associated with assessing the construction and availability of snares in the communities adjacent to Serengeti National Park, officials should, in the first instance, closely supervise casual laborers employed in the Park.…”
