Exploitation of the COSMO-SkyMed SAR System for GMTI Applications

Abstract: The focus of this paper is on the exploitation of COSMO-SkyMed spotlight SAR images for Ground Moving Target Indication (GMTI). To this purpose, a two-step processing chain is proposed: the first step performs stationary clutter removal, whereas the second step performs moving targets detection. Both the steps are based on the use of a bank of focusing filters, each one matched to a different relative speed between the radar antenna and the target, here implemented as Chirp Scaling Algorithms in order to keep … Show more

“…Assuming an azimuth resolution of 10 m the critical velocity is around 10 −6 m/s for a regional GEOSAR system; around 10 −3 m/s for a continental GEOSAR system and around 0.1 m/s for a LEOSAR system. From the above considerations every moving target in the scene can be assumed as decorrelating clutter for a GEOSAR system and modeled as in (11).…”

“…We want to define a model for the azimuth spreading of the decorrelating clutter energy in a focused GEOSAR image. The decorrelating clutter is a random process and the expected value of the clutter energy throughout the focused scene can be evaluated from (11) as…”

“…In such condition [33], conventional focusing (i.e., matched to the platform motion) is able to correctly focus the moving target. However, the proposed technique can be easily generalized to cope with a SAR strip mode or with targets experiencing along-track motions by introducing a bank structure [3], [33] composed by different branches each matched to a different target motion condition. Obviously, in real scenarios, a number of moving targets with different motion characteristics can be present.…”

“…Previous work utilizes this effect to detect moving targets. For example in [7], Pastina et al proposed a method to detect moving targets in spaceborne spotlight SAR images by a bank of focusing filters. An alternative idea to detect moving targets is utilizing image sequence.…”
