Exploiting synergistic effect of CO/NO gases for soft tissue transplantation using a hydrogel patch

Abstract: Autologous skin flap transplantation is a common method for repairing complex soft tissue defects caused by cancer, trauma, and congenital malformations. Limited blood supply range and post-transplantation ischemia-reperfusion injury can lead to distal necrosis of the flap and long-term functional loss, which severely restricts the decision-making regarding the optimal surgical plan. To address this issue, we develop a hydrogel patch that releases carbon monoxide and nitric oxide gases on demand, to afford a t… Show more

“…The Cl-containing cyanine dyes for albumin tagging have shown promising applications in terms of cancer imaging and imaging-guided surgery. 104 The covalent binding between the dyes and albumin allows for enhanced permeability and retention at the tumor site, making them suitable for tumor imaging. The brightness and photostability of the dye-albumin complexes have been significantly improved, enabling long-term bioimaging (such as imaging of sentinel lymph nodes).…”

“…Due to the diversity of vascular dissection and complexity of perforator flap design, postoperative under perfusion can often result in local necrosis caused by ischemia and hypoxia, making flap necrosis the most common and serious complication of skin flap surgery [48][49][50] . Unfortunately, there are currently no appropriate imaging techniques for accurate and noninvasive monitoring of flap functionality.…”

“…Due to the co‐existence and subtle interplay of different gasotransmitters in both physiological and pathological conditions, the co‐delivery of multiple gasotransmitters has received increasing attention, representing an emerging direction of gas therapy [4] . In this regard, several recent contributions from Chen, [5] Yang, [6] and other research groups, [7] simultaneously incorporated two kinds of gasotransmitter donors into various nanocarriers. These designs enabled the co‐release of two kinds of gasotransmitters, exhibiting enhanced therapeutic effects in angiogenesis, wound healing, and tumor immunotherapy.…”
