Exploiting the generative design potential to select the best conceptual design of an aerospace component to be produced by additive manufacturing

Abstract: Since the advent of Industry 4.0, the manufacturing sector has had to face new challenges, which require the development of new skills and innovative tools. This scenario includes innovative production processes such as additive manufacturing (AM), a technology capable of producing a component layer-by-layer directly from the 3D model without needing specific tools during the building phase. Generative design (GD) may represent an opportunity to maximise the potential of AM techniques. GD is based on parametri… Show more

“…Pilagatti et al used GD to explore optimal aerospace component re-design, ranking outcomes based upon their mass [23]. Similarly, Buonamici et al used Fusion 360 ′ s GD package to perform static structural design of a robotic gripper arm [24].…”

“…Generative design is an intelligent design approach (Wang et al, 2021) that supports the automated design of products and is widely used in architectural (Singh and Gu, 2012) and industrial design (Krish, 2011;Pilagatti et al, 2023;Plocher and Panesar, 2019). Therefore, automated design is a promising approach for creating complex AM parts (Park et al, 2020;Lim et al, 2018;Leung et al, 2019;Buechler et al, 2022).…”
