Exploration of Augmented Reality in Spatial Abilities Training: A Systematic Literature Review for the Last Decade

Abstract: This review paper presents a systematic literature review on the use of Augmented Reality (AR) in engineering education, and specifically in student’s spatial ability training, for the last decade. Researchers have explored the benefits of AR, and its application has been of increasing interest in all levels of education. Engineering students tend to have difficulties in acquiring visualization skills, and hence, AR is gaining momentum in enhancing students’ learning achievements. This paper aims to present va… Show more

“…It is also common for athletes to disengage from traditional academic studies (Adler & Adler, 1985) and fall behind academically (e.g., due to attending training camps). SA training that involves more enjoyable activities -for example, using computer games and VR or AR (augmented reality) (Uttal et al, 2014, Papakostas et al, 2021 -might be bene cial for their academic performance.…”

“…The future of avatar research in VR should consider the increasingly blended nature of mediated experience. Mixed reality or augmented reality (Silva and Teixeira, 2020 ; Papakostas et al, 2021a , b ) quite literally address the “blend" between physical and virtual experiences (e.g., objects, people/avatars, environments) (Miller et al, 2019d ). In mixed reality, the hippocampus may retain normative processing of spatial navigation in one's physical environment while users flexibly engage in a variety of virtual actions.…”
