Exploration of critical thinking and self‐regulated learning in online learning during the COVID‐19 pandemic

Abstract: An in‐depth analysis of today's online biochemistry learning is required to ensure better learning in the future. As a skill that students need to enter the world of work, critical thinking remains a goal in higher education. To develop critical thinking, students need to self‐regulate by developing their self‐regulated learning (SRL). This study aims to analyze students' critical thinking and SRL during online biochemistry learning. The research sample comprises 54 University of Mataram students. The data on … Show more

“…This could mean that a positively perceived learning environment is not enough to cultivate higher-order thinking such as emotional intelligence and critical thinking. Moreover, the shift from traditional to online learning environment may have nullified the potentially positive effect of learning environment to the cultivation of critical thinking 39 and emotional intelligence. Similarly, both emotional intelligence 31 and critical thinking 40 may require face-to-face interactions to be sufficiently developed during university.…”

“…The objective is to make decisions and to improve the thinking process (Halpern, 1998;Kong, 2014). Although critical thinking is not a component of SRL, the two concepts are closely related, and SRL has been found to be essential in developing students' critical thinking skill (Anwar & Muti'ah, 2022). Selfregulated students proactively search for information that may enrich themselves for future learning tasks, spontaneously initiate the learning process, and constantly review their performance to perfect their strategies.…”

“…9,12 During the COVID-19 pandemic, educators aimed to implement creative teaching methods that were more amenable to a remote learning environment. 13,14 Others have laid out new pedagogical strategies to make the most of such coursework. 15 Most approaches rely upon integrating computer modeling into the learning experience.…”
