Exploration of the Antioxidant Chemical Constituents and Antioxidant Performance of Various Solvent Extracts of Eighteen Plants

Abstract: This study examined the antioxidant chemical constituents (total phenolic and total flavonoid contents) and antioxidant activities [1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging, and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP)] of different solvent extracts of eighteen functional plants. The active components of the target plants were extracted using four different solvents (methanol, ethanol, chloroform, and water). Mentha piperascens … Show more

“…For example, the ethanolic extract of the strawberry fruit cultivar Sweet Charlie showed in vivo antidiabetic effects 7 . In another study, the ethanolic extract of the Indian strawberry Duchesnea chrysantha exhibited antimicrobial activity against both Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative pathogenic bacteria, 8 whereas the methanolic extract of the strawberry fruit cultivar Romina displayed neuroprotective effect 9 . Additionally, the health effects of strawberry are attributed to its role as a major provider of dietary anthocyanins, which serve as bioactive compounds to attenuate inflammation, sequester radicals and mediate gut microbiota 10 …”

“…Oxidative stress and inflammation are associated with the pathogenesis of various diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, inflammatory bowel diseases, aging, and cancer [ 6 , 7 ]. Fortunately, antioxidants, such as polyphenols and flavonoids act as reducing agents, metal chelators, and enzyme inhibitors and are capable of eliminating free radicals and inhibiting the formation of oxidants [ 8 , 9 ]. Therefore, dietary phytochemicals are essential for protecting against oxidative and inflammatory damage and preventing pathological conditions.…”
