Exploration of the Pathways to Delinquency for Female Adolescents With Depression: Implications for Cross‐Systems Collaboration and Counseling

Abstract: This study found that lack of involvement in prosocial institutions, affiliation with other troubled youth, and indifference regarding personal safety partially mediate the relationship between depression and delinquency among justice‐involved female adolescents. The results suggest that depression may not be the primary conduit to delinquency.

“…However, because these researchers did not describe the gender or sex of the nonheterosexual participants, it is not clear whether the nonheterosexual participants were lesbian or bisexual women or gay or bisexual men. In their study of 1,443 female adolescents, Mellin and Fang () reported that 72% were heterosexual, 13% were lesbian or bisexual, and 15% were not sexually active. Not only did these researchers combine lesbian and bisexual female adolescents as one homogeneous group, they used a sexual behavior identifier (not sexually active) to categorize sexual orientation.…”

“…LGBTQ+ individuals who engage in substance abuse are at increased risk for experiencing homelessness and domestic violence (Cochran & Cauce, 2006) and for experiencing suicidality and engaging in sexual behavior without receiving or giving consent because of alcohol consumption (Kerr et al, 2014). The risk of contracting HIV or other sexually transmitted infections is increased for gay and bisexual men (Newcomb, Clerkin, & Mustanski, 2011) and transgender individuals (Herbst et al, 2008) who use psychoactive substances. In addition, transgender men who enter substance abuse treatment are 5 times more likely than cisgender individuals to live with someone who abuses substances and to have more physical health issues and co-occurring disorders (Flentje et al, 2014).…”

“…3(1), June 2015 A review of the literature suggests that improving community assets and creating more chances for disadvantaged youth results in less unsupervised time, and can lessen the possible threats for juvenile delinquency (Mellien et al, 2010;Lanctot, 2004;Lanctot and Corneau, 2004)). By developing more after-school programs that specifically target African-American female adolescents, there will be more alternatives to delinquent behavior and fewer disproportionate crime rates.…”
