Exploring adolescence as a key life history stage in bioarchaeology

Abstract: Adolescence is a unique period in the life history of an individual. It is characterized by a myriad of changes that bioarchaeologists are only just coming to appreciate, related to sexual maturation, linear growth, immunological transformation, and emotional and cognitive development. New methods allow us to measure this age of transition through the stages of the adolescent growth, as a proxy for the physical development associated with sexual maturation (puberty). This review outlines ways bioarchaeologists… Show more

“…We acknowledge, however, that a study of deceased adolescents is also impacted by mortality bias. While some adolescents could have died in ways that were not impacted by their development (e.g., accidents), some individuals in this sample may have had different stress experiences than those individuals who survived to adulthood (see Lewis, 2022: 7–8 for discussion).…”

“…Thus, the broader age at menarche estimate is 14-19, but consideration of these estimates, coupled with the sample composition suggests most individuals would have reached menarche at age 15-17 years, with some early and late developers falling in the broader estimate. This wide distribution is not outside of the expected based on variation in age of menarche reported by Lewis (2022).…”

“…Before discussion of the broader implications of these results can begin, it is important to note several things. First, there is an observed degree of variation in the timing of menarche and puberty of 4-5 years between individuals in modern contexts (Lewis, 2022), and thus, a broad range from 14 to 19 years at Amarna is not unexpected. The second consideration is that "delayed" menarche is difficult to establish for the ancient world.…”
