Exploring DSCP modification pathologies in mobile edge networks

Abstract: Differentiated Services (DiffServ) provides a means for applications to classify traffic into Quality of Service (QoS) classes by reading the Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) field in the IP header and then mapping traffic to a specific QoS forwarding treatment. This paper provides new measurement data that examines how the DSCP is altered as packets traverse mobile broadband access networks. Results are presented for entire paths, differentiating between the access network behaviour and the rest of t… Show more

“…While the blackholing finding was not confirmed by other work, the rest of the results are more similar: in line with [2], the authors of [8], [9] (focusing on mobile edge networks) and [10] find that the DSCP field is often rewritten, and particularly often zeroed, by routers along a path. Setting the field to zero means that any possible effect from the input DSCP value further downstream is eliminated, but otherwise this is not getting in the way of "normal" communication.…”

“…We also analyse the MSS in the mobile edge. This used data already collected using Pathtrace in February 2017 [24] for clients in mobile edge networks. The clients measured the European MONROE [9] platform providing over 120 vantage points spanning 12 mobile providers and several edge networks.…”

“…Surveying DSCP modifications in mobile networks. MONROE is used by a group of researchers in [6] to conduct a survey on pathlevel treatment of DiffServ packets in MBB networks and identify behaviors that potentially violate the IETF specifications. Differentiated Services (DiffServ) enable classification of traffic into Quality of Service classes via usage of the Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) field in the IP header.…”
