Exploring Excipients: Enhancing Solubility in Modified Drug Release Systems Using Inexpensive Tableting and Dissolution Methods

Abstract: This practical is aimed at students who have been introduced to the tableting process, drug delivery systems, and dissolution. The student can design and manufacture a tablet investigating the effect of excipients and their role in tablet design and then generate a release profile of the tablet by using a dissolution apparatus, flow-through cell, and UV–vis kinetics. Economical alternatives to the otherwise expensive dies, presses, and dissolution apparatus required to conduct the practical are included so tha… Show more

“…A similar pitch in the past was made for including polymer science in the chemistry curriculum which is now taught in most chemistry coursework . The theory of sensing requires amalgamation of fluid dynamics, , molecular transport, , and binding kinetics. , Several theoretical and laboratory activities have been suggested for teaching these topics individually, but a coherent introduction in chemistry coursework remains missing.…”

“…The use of mechanical stirrers in the laboratory ranges from small scale to large batch reactors. There have been numerous designs published in this Journal for overhead mechanical stirrers ranging from the use of bicycle parts and food mixers to other devices. In some situations, such as the synthesis of magnetic particles or dissolution of tablets, , a magnetic stir plate is not ideal. Even a small-scale mechanical stirrer can be rather expensive, preventing its adoption for teaching laboratories.…”

“…In the pharmaceutical industry, in vitro drug dissolution tests are typically performed with dissolution devices authorized by and following the standard protocol developed by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) . Chemistry education studies have been conducted for implementing pharmaceutical analysis in teaching laboratories, particularly in the identification and quantification of drug molecules and introduction to drug design. However, there are a limited number of laboratory experiments in dissolution testing developed for the undergraduate chemistry curriculum; , USP dissolution apparatuses are expensive, and it is not feasible to provide one instrument for each student group in the teaching lab. We decided to design a cost-effective apparatus and develop a dissolution protocol for the undergraduate teaching laboratory.…”
