Exploring Intervention for Widows in Binga District, Zimbabwe: A Social Work Integrative Model

Abstract: This article discusses a social work intervention model that addresses the psychosocial plight of widows in Zimbabwe. The ARTICLE uses a qualitative approach and a phenomenological research design as a basis for one-on-one interviews, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews that provided the information needed for the formulation of a social work basic care integrative model. The findings of the research indicate that there are gaps in social work interventions that suggest the need for an integr… Show more

“…Poverty is the most common cause of crime, and it was not surprising that the offenders mentioned it as one of the factors that influenced them to commit crimes of theft and robbery to maintain themselves and their families. The impact of poverty and peer influence confirm how the ecosystem theory is relevant in understanding how environments and the interactions with the environment influence human behaviour (Dube, 2016;.…”

“…All these different environments can significantly impact the individual. The ecosystem theory, according to Johnson (2008:2 as referenced by Dube, 2016), provides comprehensive knowledge of how individuals connect to their environment, which affects them, and how they impact the same environment. An interplay of systems such as individuals, groups, communities, and culture is emphasised as a primary driver of the positive and bad outcomes of such interactions (Johnson, 2008:3, as cited by Dube, 2016).…”

“…Widows in low-resourced communities are immersed in the associated health issues. Many of the widows in low-resourced African communities, especially Sub-Saharan Africa are affected by the Human-Immunodeficiency Virus and the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV and AIDS) whilst health resources in these communities are generally poor and substandard (Dube 2021). The costs of maintaining good health are high and unaffordable for most widows.…”

“…Many of the lowresourced communities require a multi-sectoral approach to accrue enough resources for sound interventions. These interventions can also be carried out at the micro level and mezzo levels (Dube 2021;Shulman 2012). This will ensure that all aspects of both the widow and their children's needs, including socioeconomic, spiritual, psychosocial, and legal needs, are met, with a focus on a viable referral system that connects widows to welltrained interventionists who are equipped with contemporary human rights paradigms and practices to match current and global intervention trends.…”

“…This has also been overlooked by social workers in practice and yet a very significant focus area and a practice mandate (DuBois and Miley 2014). Widows from low-resourced communities of the developing world experience worse-off circumstances in caring for their children as they are prone to poverty and oppressive cultural practices and are less likely to solicit deserved professional interventions (Dube 2021). This is a critical condition that this paper views as a gap that should be closed by discussing considerations for social workers in practice in order to ameliorate the struggles experienced by widows in their single-handedly efforts of caring for their children.…”
