Exploring Meeting Science

Abstract: As a relatively new field of scientific study, many questions persist regarding meeting science. For example, what meetings science is, who meeting scientists are, and what distinguishes meeting science from other related fields of inquiry. The purpose of this chapter is to address these commonly asked questions. In this chapter we review what meeting science is, discuss the nascent nature of the field, describe who meeting scientists are and what they do, and disentangle the relationship between meeting scien… Show more

“…Inspired by early work of Schwartzman (1986) who argued for the importance of studying meetings and talk in organizations, meeting science has evolved into a field of study and is defined as the systematic study of what happens prior to, during, and after meetings, in addition to how meetings fit into the context of organizations ( Olien et al, 2015 ). Over the past twenty years, meetings research has focused on developing best practices for meeting design and composition, meeting structure and management of actions during meetings, and after-meeting considerations of participant satisfaction and decision outcomes ( Mroz et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Meetings are a unique context-intertwined with, yet distinct from, broader work on groups and teams-with wide-ranging implications for how individuals within organizations perform in their roles and develop attitudes about coworkers, the work itself, and the organization. Meeting science is the systematic study of what occurs before, during, and after meetings; the outcomes of meetings; and how meetings fit within broader organizational contexts (Olien, Rogelberg, Lehmann-Willenbrock, & Allen, 2015; see Table 2). Although meeting science certainly complements and informs the science of teams, especially given the widespread use of meetings by teams, meeting science is context specific.…”

“…Much of the earlier organisational research literature used meetings mostly "as a mere context for other group phenomena" (Olien et al 2015), largely ignoring their importance as a topic of research in themselves. Of course, research on subjects which are highly relevant to meetings, such as team interactions and leadership, existed but for a long time, meetings per se have not been a topic of research in management literature (Dittrich et al 2011;Allen et al 2015).…”
