Exploring NH3 Transport Properties by Tailoring Ionic Liquids in Pebax-Based Hybrid Membranes

Abstract: Ammonia (NH 3 ) separation and recovery from NH 3 -containing gases favor resource utilization and ecological protection. Ionic liquids (ILs) are promising alternatives to fabricate polymer-based hybrid membranes with excellent and tunable properties. Herein, [Eim][NTf 2 ] and [Emim][NTf 2 ], with different hydrogen bond donating abilities and viscosities, were used to tailor NH 3 transport properties in the membranes for enhancing NH 3 separation performance. Poly(ether-block-amide) (Pebax)/[Eim][NTf 2 ] memb… Show more

“…In addition, incorporating NH 3 -interacted small molecules, such as ILs, into the polymer matrix is expected to improve the NH 3 permeability and selectivity. As expected, the NH 3 permeability was remarkably enhanced with increasing IL content, benefiting from the enhanced NH 3 solubility [ 184 , 185 ]. It is worth mentioning that the moderating interaction between membranes and NH 3 plays an important role in increasing NH 3 solubility, while excessively strong interactions also restrict NH 3 diffusivity.…”

“…Furthermore, ILs-based membrane materials are prospective for efficient NH 3 separation due to their designability and high gas affinity. To explore NH 3 transport properties, Zhang et al 106 first introduced [Eim][NTf 2 ] and [Emim][NTf 2 ] in the poly(ether- block -amide) membranes for enhancing NH 3 separation performance. The designed (Pebax)/[Eim][NTf 2 ] showed superior NH 3 permeability of 2118.7 Barrer with NH 3 /N 2 and NH 3 /H 2 selectivities of 467.0 and 127.2, respectively.…”

“…As far as we know, there have been some precedents for the combination of ILs and membrane materials for NH 3 separation. 106–109 However, the reports on the combination of DES and membrane materials for NH 3 separation are relatively few. Most of them focus on the DES-based support liquid membranes, blend liquid membranes, and gel membrane materials for gas separation, such as SO 2 , CO, and CO 2 .…”

“…The modification of nanofillers by IL is a promising method to prepare multifunctional polymer nanocomposites, which can be regarded as a practical route for the development of adaptable and monitorable systems [ 44 ]. Much experimental evidence has shown that the addition of IL to PEBAX can lead to the formation of more amorphous and less crystalline membranes [ 47 , 48 ] due to the fact that ILs increase the tendency of polymers to form new bonds and form a homogeneous mixture with the IL. Ample experimental work has shown that membranes of PEBAX or other polymers with ILs have excellent gas permeability and selectivity [ 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 ].…”
