Exploring online social networks of school leaders in times of COVID‐19

Abstract: The COVID‐19 pandemic has raised a wide range of challenges for school leaders that they now (rapidly) have to address. Consequently, they also turn to informal learning networks, in order to share and collect information and reach out to their communities. In this context, the current study investigates the underlying networks structures among school leaders, what type of information is being shared, and what differences can be identified when comparing a nation‐wide and a localized sample. “…It has also become evident that distance managers and staff should be digitally literate and have a sound knowledge of technology to be effective when working remotely. One of the main issues requiring the attention of managers to ensure that duties are executed successfully in the WFH scenario is therefore to ensure that staff have the necessary technological skills and capabilities to use the tools of trade when working remotely (Hughes, 2021;Rehm et al, 2021). In this regard, the university should ensure that distance managers and staff are provided with the necessary tools of trade, as well as updated data packages and laptops so that they could perform their duties in an online space fully.…”

This makes social media-based communities potentially great places for community members to get information and learn because they offer a wide range of affordances to support online interactions (Rehm et al, 2021).…”

“…While often not explicitly invoking the doctrines of relationism, several leadership studies have closely examined patterns and the content of relations and social networks among school leaders ( Díaz-Gibson et al, 2017 ). For example, Rehm and his colleagues (2021) analysed how relational resources are embedded in school leaders’ informal network structures on social media using data from a nation-wide US sample. Further, there is a long line of sociological research, mainly inspired by Georg Simmel's legacy, which emphasises the analysis of interdependency, intersubjectivity and reciprocity in experience and meaning ( Crossley, 2022 ; Simmel, 2012 ).…”
