Exploring Shared Services from an IS Perspective: A Literature Review and Research Agenda

Abstract: Shared services have gained significance as an organizational arrangement, in particular for support functions, to reduce costs, increase quality, and create new capabilities. The information systems (IS) function is amenable to sharing arrangements and information systems can enable sharing in other functional areas. However, despite being a promising area for IS research, literature on shared services in the IS discipline is scarce and scattered. There is still little consensus on what shared services is. “…Under the Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classification, a field of research (FOR) is a hierarchical structure used to classify research work. Previous IS studies have used this classification (Fielt, Bandara, Miskon, & Gable, 2014;Zhang & Li, 2005;Zhang et al, 2009). We complemented this approach with two scholarly journal classifications that use the Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classification scheme to establish journals' research discipline: the Australian Business Dean Council journal quality list and the Excellence in Research list for Australia.…”

“…We carefully read titles, keywords, and abstracts of all hits, which resulted in an initial sample of 141 academic papers. Then, we cross-checked the resulting article list with three previous reviews in the field of shared services (Bondarouk and Friebe, 2014; Fielt et al, 2014; Richter and Brühl, 2017) and included one additional article. Next, we conducted a backward search by scanning each article’s references and a forward search using Google Scholar’s citation function, and we found three more articles.…”
