Exploring Stiffness Modulation in Prosthetic Hands and Its Perceived Function in Manipulation and Social Interaction

Abstract: To physically interact with a rich variety of environments and to match situation-dependent requirements, humans adapt both the force and stiffness of their limbs. Reflecting this behavior in prostheses may promote a more natural and intuitive control and, consequently, improve prostheses acceptance in everyday life. This pilot study proposes a method to control a prosthetic robot hand and its impedance, and explores the utility of variable stiffness when performing activities of daily living and physical soci… Show more

“…The hand is capable of morphing itself around objects of different shapes and sizes, grasping and manipulating them in different functional ways. Soft robotics techniques and materials employed in the construction of the hand also make the fingers resilient to impacts and joint dislocations and contribute to the feeling of compliance and naturalness in physical social and self-interaction 35 . These characteristics, together with a carefully manufactured cosmetic glove, make for a high degree of anthropomorphism of the hand both aesthetical and functional.…”

“…The SoftHand Pro (SHP) is an articulated soft robotic hand of 19 DOF controlled by only one motor (1 DoA). Designed with the concept of human hand synergies, it results in a simple yet useful solution with adaptable capabilities for multiple object manipulation and human interaction [14]. Find a more detailed description of the SHP in [9].…”
