Exploring the Brønsted acidity of UiO-66 (Zr, Ce, Hf) metal–organic frameworks for efficient solketal synthesis from glycerol acetalization

Abstract: Zr, Ce, Hf-based isostructural UIO-66 MOFs exhibited varying degree of Brønsted acidity (UiO-66(Hf) > UiO-66(Ce) > UiO-66(Zr)) on their secondary building units owing to the differences in their oxophilities.

“…,[14,15,16] Most widely used heterogeneous catalysts include zeolites„ porous silicas ,[18,19,20,21] and ion‐exchange resins . Recently, metal oxides, ,[23,24,25,26] MOFs Ionic liquids and porous polymers ,[32,33,34,35] are also being explored for catalytic applications. Heterogeneous catalysts such as natural clays, ion‐exchange resins, silica‐based sulfonic acid, Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @SO 3 H, polyaniline sulfate, carbon‐based solid acid, SiO 2 ‐ p ‐TSA, zeolites etc have been extensively investigated for tetrahydropyranylation of alcohols.…”

“…6,7 Previously, alcohol oxidations were performed using stoichiometric amounts of toxic oxidants which inevitably produce harmful by-products and pose severe threats to the environment. [8][9][10][11][12][13] As a result, researchers focused to explore new heterogeneous catalysts that can utilize environmentally friendly oxidants like molecular oxygen or H 2 O 2 for oxidation reactions. 14 Thereby, it offers several advantages like easy separation, recyclability, and reusability of the catalysts.…”
