Exploring the challenges in accessing care and support for cancer survivors in Australia during COVID-19

Abstract: Background: Amidst this global pandemic, the impact on accessing care and support for cancer survivors in Australia is uncertain and unknown. The purpose of the current study is to explore the impact that COVID-19 had on Australian rural/ regional cancer survivors and their ability to access health services, treatment, and supportive care during this pandemic. “…Environmental factors, especially social support, have been found to affect cancer patients' psychological adaptation (Eicher et al, 2015 ) and overall resilience (Somasundaram & Devamani, 2016 ). A recent study explored the challenges in accessing care and support for cancer survivors in Australia during COVID‐19 and indicated that COVID‐19 had a significant impact on the lives of cancer survivors with the biggest challenges being reduced social support and the inability to see healthcare providers, older participants reported greater impact and distress due to COVID‐19 (Davis et al, 2021 ). In line with our findings, Chen et al ( 2021 ) have found that living alone was one of the risk factors for psychological distress including depression, anxiety and insomnia among breast cancer patients.…”
