Exploring the challenges of electric vehicle adoption in final mile parcel delivery

Abstract: The rise in e-commerce has increased last mile parcel deliveries, in turn affecting the sustainability of transport. With the worldwide efforts to minimise fossil fuel use including the UK Government's plans to end the sales of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2035, alternative fuels need to be explored. Currently, one of the most promising solutions is the electric vehicle (EV) which produces zero tailpipe emissions. This paper aims to explore the challenges of adopting EVs in final mile parcel deliveries, a… Show more

“…The range of a conventional vehicle is practically unlimited with the minimum time required to fill the tank. The range of electric vehicles is limited, with significant vehicle battery charging times [18]. The key trends in the development of electric vehicles are based on increasing the distance traveled and reducing the charging time.…”

“…Information Handling Services (IHS) Markit predicts that EVs could capture 45% of the new car market already in 2040 and nearly 80% by 2050 due to great technological advances, decreased manufacturing costs, and international policies that facilitate EV expansion. Figure 6 shows a comparison between EVs, including battery (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV), fuel cell (FCV), and traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles [41]. EV propulsion drive system is considered the core element of the vehicle.…”

“…Hence, it would be meaningful to explore the psychological determinants of carriers' intentions to use cargo EVs in the LMD sector, highlighting their importance in understanding carriers' intention to use cargo EVs.Previous studies on cargo EVs mainly focused on technology (e.g. operation of vehicle, charging infrastructure, battery capacity and vehicle safety issues) (Anosike et al. , 2021; Quak et al.…”
