Exploring the Efficacy of Comparative Bioarchaeological Approaches in Providing Answers on Marginality and Networking

Abstract: This paper investigates the efficacy of comparative bioarchaeological approaches in exploring the impact of economic marginality on human lifeways. Skeletal remains from the Late Bronze Age cemetery of Achlada in Northern Greece were chosen to address this, as this specific community was probably less well networked, evident in its location away from major communication routes and the paucity of grave goods at the site. “…Alternatively, a higher probability of survival for the females of Socha (as observed in Golemi) could be suggested but the available data do not allow further interpretations. The average stature for males (1.65 m, n = 3) and females (1.55 m, n = 4) is similar to the mean calculated values for other contemporary assemblages, most of them based on femoral length (Michael et al, 2021;Papathanasiou et al, 2012;Tritsaroli, 2021).…”

“…Porotic hyperostosis (CPR, Table S3) was present on three of 12 observed crania (25%), a frequency that is comparable to other LBA sites (although the entire external cranial surface was not observable for five of these individuals because of post‐depositional alterations on the bones) (Michael et al, 2021: tab. 9).…”
