Exploring the feasibility of proactive reputations

Abstract: Reputation mechanisms help peers in a peer-to-peer (P2P) system avoid unreliable or malicious peers. In application-level networks, however, short peer life-times mean reputations are often generated from a small number of past transactions. These reputation values are less "reliable," and more vulnerable to bad-mouthing or collusion attacks. We address this issue by introducing proactive reputations, a first-hand history of transactions initiated to augment incomplete or short-term reputation values. We prese… Show more

“…In contrast, approaches like proactive (Swamynathan et al, 2008) and local (Liu et al, 2007) reputation do not depend on ratings from third parties. Instead, they provide various means for a peer to evaluate the trustworthiness of a target peer directly, hence they are inherently immune to bad-mouthing or collusion attacks.…”

“…Using recent transactions with strangers, a peer estimates the probability of being cheated by the next stranger, and decides whether to trust the next stranger using that probability. Swamynathan et al explore proactive firsthand reputations as a solution to generate quick and reliable reputations for short-lived network peers [51]. We discuss this solution in greater detail in Sects.…”

“…For such users, we describe the use of proactive reputations, a technique to obtain accurate, firsthand estimates of a user's reliability [51]. Our experimental evaluations demonstrate how these firsthand observations are resistant to both churn attacks and user collusion.…”
