This service community is based on the obstacles faced by international relations students in West Kalimantan who do not have good skills in writing position papers. Another obstacle encountered is that many students do not like reading international news or journals, so they are not confident in following the United Nation model.However, students should have adequate skills in scientific writing, communication skills in English, public speaking, analytical skills and critical thinking.The aim of this activity is helping to stimulate students to have the courage to write and practice taking part in MUN, and to get used to conveying ideas and arguments in public. This activity was carried out in September 2022 with educational material regarding position papers, questions and answers, documentation and reporting. After participating in training activities, students have increased understanding in writing topic background, past international action, country policy, and possible solutions. That can be seen from the relevance of the topic, sharpness of arguments, appropriateness of structure, use of appropriate language, and consistency in writing. Students also understand examples of position papers on various topics such as politics, economics, social and culture.

Teaching U.S. Constitutional Design: The Case of the “Genovian Revolution”

Instructors often lament that their students possess a distorted understanding of the U.S. Constitution. Students often initially fail to appreciate how power, group interests, and conflictual processes have shaped American political institutions and their long-term effects. To foster a view of U.S. Constitutional design that better reflects the core insights of contemporary political science, I introduce a two-week constitutional convention simulation that centers on the fictional Principality of Genovia. Working in groups, students assume roles within various segments of Genovian society who seek democratic representation following the sudden abdication of their autocratic prince. The simulation is designed to foreshadow key concepts in American government and politics. It does so in a way that allows for vociferous debate and conflict while sidestepping students' pre-existing ideologies and party attachments. It also provides a collaborative, active learning environment. In a pre-post survey instrument, I test the effectiveness of the Genovian simulation in fostering key learning outcomes vis-a-vis several other classroom modules, finding that the Genovian exercise is beneficial to students on several dimensions.

The global pandemic fundamentally reshaped how students and faculty think about education. The immediate need for meaningful instruction and learning experiences spurred innovation in online and hybrid course delivery. Even as students return to the classroom, faculty must anticipate future needs for online instruction. Students enrolled in an courses in the Fall 2022 semester at SHSU and SFASU participated in a joint, virtual simulation as a class exercise. This cross-university experience allowed students to gain perceptions and relationships outside their own university with students pursuing similar academic interests and goals. The goals of the simulation were two-fold: (1) enhance international national relations content knowledge regarding a regional intergovernmental organization and alliance behavior, and (2) develop 21st century skills such as collaboration, communication, and decision-making. This paper focuses on our rationale for the simulation, our experience as faculty members, and our plans to improve the simulation for the Fall 2023 semester.
