Exploring the iron metabolism in multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients in treatment

Abstract: The iron metabolism plays a key role in the progression of active Tuberculosis. Several studies have shown a link between iron metabolism disorders an active tuberculosis. The aim of this study was to explore the iron metabolism of 100 patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) treated with second generation anti-tuberculosis drugs. The levels of iron in serum were assessed using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) while ferritin and transferrin were determined by imminoturbidimetry methods. The … Show more

“…Iron plays an essential role in any aspect of metabolic mechanism, including immune system modulation. Mycobacterial infection may induce inflammatory anemia by producing cytokines: interferon-γ, TNF-α, IL-1, and IL-10, leading to iron sequestration by macrophages and erythropoietin suppression [40]. Anemia also affects the culture conversion of MDR-TB patients, but the mechanism is not clear yet [41].…”

“…There is evidence that mycobacterial infection can lead to inflammatory anaemia by inducing production of cytokines such as IL-1, IL-10, interferons-γ and TNF-α which cause macrophages to sequester iron and suppress erythropoietin levels [13]. There are many metabolic processes that require iron as a key factor, including immune system modulation [14]. In India, anaemia is very common and more prevalent among lower socio-economic class patients [15].…”
