Exploring the presence of markers of decidualization in the fallopian tubes: a systematic review

Abstract: The Fallopian tubes (FTs) are part of the female upper genital tract. The healthy FT provides the biological environment for successful fertilisation and facilitates the subsequent movement of the conceptus to the endometrial cavity. However, when the FT is damaged, as with salpingitis, pyosalpinx and hydrosalpinx, it may increase the risk of an ectopic pregnancy, a life-threatening condition. Decidualisation refers to a multifactorial process by which the endometrium changes to permit blastocys… Show more

“…Approximately 15% of known correctly sited pregnancies end in miscarriage and can cause significant morbidity if heavy bleeding or infection occurs 3 . A further 1–2% of pregnancies are located outside the endometrial cavity, with the majority (~ 98%) implanting in the fallopian tubes; these EPs are the leading cause of maternal mortality in the first trimester 4 , 5 . PUL describes a pregnancy that cannot be located on transvaginal ultrasonography (TVS); 5–42% of early pregnancy scans fall into this category 6 .…”
