Exploring the Relationship Between Interrater Correlations and Validity of Peer Ratings

Abstract: A field study was conducted to investigate the relationship between interrater correlations and validity estimates of peer ratings. Validity coefficients and interrater correlations were calculated for 281 work units in a large law enforcement organization in Israel. The main result was a weak positive linear relationship between these two variables. Furthermore, in some of the analyses conducted, a nonlinear quadratic component in the relationship between these measures was evident. Validity was low only when… Show more

“…These results provide evidence to confirm our second hypothesis (less lenient and less range restricted cases will show higher interrater correlations) and show the importance of controlling contamination due to social desirability and/or leniency in performance measures. This concurs with previous research finding of correlation between raters expressing a combination of factors with different theoretical relationships with validity [ 39 , 17 ]. In this case, self-leniency may be one of these factors.…”

“…The three raters' evaluations were averaged to calculate an index of group-based anger. Inter-rater reliability (a), computed using the most popular measure of the correlation between raters (Kasten & Nevo, 2008;Murphy & De Shon, 2000), was 0.90.…”
