Exploring the Relevance of Complexity Theory for Mixed Methods Research

Abstract: While the field of mixed methods has discussed complexity theory, more clarification regarding its conceptualization is needed. Accordingly, we first review how various fields have interpreted and applied the central ideas of complexity theory in the social sciences. We then analyze two empirical studies that used complexity theory and mixed methods. We highlight how both studies examined complex systems, used elements of complexity theory as their theoretical framework, and used complexity–congruent methodolo… Show more

“…This Special Issue will be coordinated as generally described in the previous announcement about special issues at Journal of Mixed Methods Research (JMMR; Molina-Azorin & Fetters, 2018). Articles for the Special Issue should focus on relevant theoretical and methodological topics relevant to mixed methods research rather than substantive/disciplinary topics.…”

“…How could mixed methods help elucidate and find solutions for the psychological stress of the outbreak (Watkins et al, 2017)? How could new or existing theory inform design, analysis, or interpretation of mixed methods data (Evans et al, 2011; Kallemeyn et al, 2019)? How could mixed methods social network analysis (Fielding & Cisneros-Puebla, 2009; Yousefi Nooraie et al, 2020), mixed methods GPS (Christensen et al, 2011), or mixed methods GIS (Bhuyan & Zhang, 2019; Jones, 2017) be used to understand and curb the epidemic?…”
