Exploring the Role of Agricultural Services in Production Efficiency in Chinese Agriculture: A Case of the Socialized Agricultural Service System

Abstract: In recent decades, the Chinese government launched a socialized agricultural service system to help smallholders quickly modernize. This system helps farmers adopt modern-day farming operations to meet ever-increasing food and fiber requirements. The present study was conducted to analyze the impacts of this system on agricultural production efficiency. To this end, the Hubei province of China was selected, and the required data were retrieved from the Hubei Statistical Yearbook and Rural Statistical Yearbook … Show more

“…Recent research indicates that agricultural socialized service organizations-with their technological, capital and human strengths-have implanted advanced elements into the agricultural industry chain that alleviate the adverse effects of smallholder resource shortages and fragmented operations. Contact between smallholder farmers and socialized service organizations may facilitate the adoption of farming techniques, improvements in agricultural efficiency and the reduction in fertilizer application [23,24]. In China, agricultural socialized services are an agricultural business model in which cooperatives, private agricultural service firms, and self-employed agricultural service agents provide agricultural services in all aspects of agriculture before, during and after production to smallholder farmers, such as agricultural materials supply, machine-rent, labor-hire services and so on [25].…”

“…Agricultural mechanization plays an important supporting role in the transformation of agricultural production, and is the only way for China to realize agricultural modernization [61]. The use of agricultural machinery in agricultural production can significantly reduce agricultural labor costs and plant protection costs, such as weeding and pest control [62][63][64][65]. The use of agricultural machinery can also allow for multiple cropping, improve agricultural production capacity and farmland output rate [66,67] to increase the value of agricultural output [68], increase farmers' income [69], and reduce poverty.…”

“…With an increase in service intensity, socialized services have a larger scope of influence and can have a larger positive impact on optimizing fertilizer application in a larger scale [22] . This condition is sufficient for improving agricultural production efficiency through moderate-scale operations based on agricultural socialized services [23] .…”
