Exploring the Role of Intramolecular Interactions in the Suppression of Quantum Tunneling of the Magnetization in a 3d-4f Single-Molecule Magnet

Abstract: Hydroxide-bridged Fe III 4 Ln III 2 clusters having the general formula [Fe 4 Ln 2 (μ 3 -OH) 2 (mdea) 6 (SCN) 2 (NO 3 ) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ]•4H 2 O• 2MeCN {Ln = Y (1), Dy ( 2), mdea = N-methyldiethanolamine} were synthesized and magnetically characterized. The thermal relaxation of the magnetization for 2 and the diluted Fe III 4 Dy III Y III complex 3 (with and without applied field) has been analyzed. “…Direct current (dc) susceptibility measurements of 1 and 2 were performed under a 1000 Oe dc field in the range of 1.8–300 K. As shown in Figure a, the χ M T value at room temperature is 28.04 cm 3 K mol –1 , which is slightly lower than the expected value of 28.34 cm 3 K mol –1 for two uncoupled Dy III ions ( 6 H 15/2 , g = 4/3) .
