Exploring the role of the combination of propolis and vitamin D3 on VCAM-1 and Caspase-3 expression in preventing atherosclerosis in chronic kidney disease rats

Abstract: Background: Increased blood pressure that occurs in chronic kidney disease (CKD) is influenced by the occurrence of thickening of blood vessels. This study evaluates the utilization of propolis which acts as an anti-inflammatory and vitamin D3 which plays a role in calcium-phosphate metabolism, that when combined are expected to prevent atherosclerosis. Methods: This experimental research used a post-test only group design with a total of 24 male rats divided into 3 groups. Subjects were induced to develop CKD… Show more

“…The polarization and accumulation of macrophages in a chronic pro-inflammatory state can lead to significant and irreversible vascular damage, affecting clinical outcomes [23]. Targeting macrophage inflammation may offer therapeutic potential by promoting early resolution of inflammation [24]. However, the mechanisms underlying macrophage-mediated control of the inflammatory response in the vasculature are not fully understood.…”

“…Propolis has also demonstrated anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antihypertensive, and antiatherosclerotic activities. Moreover, its constituents possess medicinal properties that enable tissue regeneration and repair after damage [3][4][5][6].…”

“…In the elderly population, it is suspected that there is an increase in the activation of the inflammatory system. [2][3][4] Vitamin D is widely known for its function in calcium homeostasis and bone formation. It also plays a role in the inflammatory process and the immune system, which affects the formation and development of atherosclerotic plaques.…”
