Programming in pictures is an approach where pictures and moving pictures are used as super-characters to represent the features of computational algorithms and data structures, as well as for explaining the models and application methods involved. *AIDA is a computer language that supports programming in pictures. This language and its environment have been developed and promoted as a testbed for various innovations in information technology (IT) research and implementation, including exploring the compactness of the programs and their adaptive software systems, and obtaining better understanding of information resources. In this paper, new features of the environment and methods of their implementation are presented. They are considered within a case study of a large-scale module of a nuclear safety analysis system to demonstrate that *AIDA language is appropriate for developing efficient codes of serious applications and for providing support, based on folding/unfolding techniques, enhancing the readability, maintainability and algorithmic transparency of programs. Features of this support and the code efficiency are presented through the results of a computational comparison with a FORTRAN equivalent.

In this research, a scale was developed to determine the programming-oriented computational thinking skills of university students. The participants were 360 students studying in various departments at different universities in Turkey for computer programming. The scale consists of 33 items under conceptual knowledge, algorithmic thinking, and evaluation subscale. While there was no significant difference between the students’ conceptual knowledge and algorithmic thinking skills, the evaluation skills of male students differed significantly compared to females. Programming experience has a significant effect on conceptual knowledge, algorithmic thinking, and evaluation. The algorithmic thinking skills of the students who have low, middle, and high-level programming experience differed significantly. In terms of the development of conceptual knowledge and evaluation skills, it was observed that students should have at least one year of programming experience, but this experience will not make a significant difference if it is four years or more. It is thought that this scale, which is structured for different applications (e.g., web, game, robot) and learning environments (e.g., text, block) within the framework of its programming capabilities (conceptual, semantic, strategic knowledge), will contribute significantly to the evaluation of computational thinking as programming oriented.

In this study, the effect of Introduction to programming course designed with authentic learning activities on students' computational thinking and programming self-efficacy beliefs was examined. This study is a mixed method research in which quantitative and qualitative data are used together. The study group consisted of 17 students studying at a state university, a vocational school, and the electronics and automation department. Before and after the study, the students completed the computer thinking scale and the programming self-efficacy beliefs scale. At the end of the study, students were interviewed to evaluate their development in Computational thinking and Programming self-efficacy beliefs. The results showed that authentic programming activities significantly improved Creativity, Algorithmic thinking, Critical thinking and the overall scores of Computational thinking. Students associated the development of computational thinking skills with engaging activities, continuous support, daily life problems, and learning to code. It was revealed that students' programming selfefficacy beliefs developed significantly. In future research, different activities can be planned to encourage students to do it repeat at home. Students can be crossed between groups each week to give them the opportunity to work with different people.
