Exploring the Scientific Interest for Olive Oil Origin: A Bibliometric Study from 1991 to 2018

Abstract: The authenticity and traceability of olive oils have been a growing concern over the past decades, generating numerous scientific studies. This article applies the tools of bibliometric analyses to explore the evolution and strategic orientation of the research focused on olive oil geographical and varietal origins. A corpus of 732 papers published in 178 different journals between 1991 and 2018 was considered. The most productive journals, authors and countries are highlighted, as well as the most cited artic… Show more

“…As a result, the geographical authentication of olive oil is becoming an important trend in scientific research, particularly in the field of analytical chemistry [ 12 ]. Between 1994 and 2020, the number of studies containing keywords related to the geographical authentication of olive oil has increased drastically; there were less than 30 articles in the 1990s and more than 240 in 2020 alone [ 13 ].…”

“…Its measurement objects are mainly the amount of literature (various publications, especially journal papers and citations), the number of authors (individual collectives or groups), countries, institutes, and the main directions of future research in this field (Butt et al ., 2021). However, in the prior literature, there is just one paper on the use of bibliometric analysis tools to investigate the evolution and strategic direction of the olive oil variety’s origin, which covers over 732 articles (Maléchaux et al ., 2020). A comprehensive systematic analysis of olive oil literature is warranted.…”

“…Bibliometric analysis is a method assessing the status and trends of a particular research field and thus providing ideas and directions for future research. Bibliometrics technique has been adopted in Web of Science category of Food Science and Technology such as, bibliometric analysis of food safety governance research from 1999 to 2019 (Shen et al, 2021), a knowledge domain visualization review of thirty years of halal food research (Mostafa, 2020), Atlas of scientific institutions in food science (Guerrero-Bote et al, 2016), characteristics and trends in global tea research (Wambu et al, 2017), destination food research (Lyu et al, 2020), exploring the scientific interest for olive oil origin (Maléchaux et al, 2020), Food label design (Latino et al, 2020), Innovation, research and development on the passion fruit peel flour (Florêncio et al, 2020), internet of things in food safety (Bouzembrak et al, 2019), Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food (Yeung et al, 2018), mapping the scientific research on wine and health (Aleixandre et al, 2013), recent developments on production, purification and biological activity of marine peptides (Sridhar et al, 2021), research trends in food chemistry (Kamdem et al, 2019), the berries on the top (Yeung et al, 2019), trends in research on durum wheat and pasta (Cecchini et al, 2020), urban food systems (Zhong et al, 2021).…”
