Exploring the Serbian GenBank barley (Hordeum vulgare L. subsp. vulgare) collection for powdery mildew resistance

Abstract: Unlocking resistance genes in genbank collections are of prime importance for securing sustainable crop production. In this regard, the Serbian GenBank barley collection, comprising 93 local landraces and 36 commercial cultivars and elite barley breeding lines, was screened for novel resistances to powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei) using a set of 28 isolates with a wide spectrum of virulences/avirulences. No line was resistant to all the isolates, but one and three accessions showed resistance t… Show more

“…For example, seven out of 159 local landraces of the Spanish core collection were resistant to seven Bgh isolates ( Silvar et al, 2009 ). Furthermore, only one out of 147 Chinese varieties was resistant to all 32 isolates of Bgh ( Dreiseitl and Yang, 2007 ), and no powdery mildew resistance to 28 isolates was found among 129 genotypes obtained from the Serbian barley gene bank ( Šurlan-Momirović et al, 2016 ). Thus, Hvs is recognized as a good source of broadly acting resistance to Bgh .…”

“…Bgh infection values were determined in a detached leaf assay using second leaves of approximately 12-day-old seedlings, as described [ 91 ]. First, a worldwide collection of 76 landraces (WHEALBI_LRC) was inoculated either with isolate JKI-75 or JKI-242, which exhibit a complex and complementing virulence spectra [ 92 ]. Second, a worldwide collection of 127 cultivars (WHEALBI_CULT) was inoculated with the same two Bgh isolates.…”

“…Many other sets of barley landraces collected in Tunisia [ 52 ], Morocco [ 53 , 54 , 55 , 56 , 57 , 58 , 59 , 60 , 61 ], Australia [ 62 ], China [ 51 ], Greece [ 63 ], Jordan [ 64 ], Latvia [ 65 ], Libya [ 66 ], Spain [ 28 , 67 , 68 ], Turkey [ 69 , 70 ] or from more than one area [ 71 , 72 , 73 , 74 , 75 , 76 , 77 ] have been studied, and numerous known and unknown specific resistances were characterized including accessions resistant to a wide range of pathogen isolates.…”
