Exploring the Synergy Between HPTLC and HPLC-DAD for the Investigation of Wine-Making By-Products

Abstract: Both environmental and economic issues are increasingly pushing for the revalorization of agri-food by-products, including those arising from wine industry. Wastes produced from wine-making processes are important sources of biologically active compounds, mainly phenolic acids and flavonoids, which could be re-used for several applications, for example as additive surrogates or new ingredients in foodstuffs and/or pharmaceuticals. Therefore, the development of methods aimed at isolating, characterizing and qua… Show more

“…Wound microbes contribute to major impairment in healing process, altering the wound microenvironment by prolonging inflammation, inducing excessive exudate formation, digesting wound tissue with extracellular enzymes, exacerbating devascularization caused by the wound, impeding re-epithelialization [28,29]. Among the listed mechanisms, prolonged inflammation is the primary stumbling block that expedites the repertoire of the other challenging events.…”

“…Various colors of bands at different Rf values may correspond to the different phytochemicals. According to Bernardi et al (2019), blue fluorescent and purple spots can be attributed to phenolic acids and anthocyanins, respectively while flavonoids appeared as orange or yellow spots. Chlorophylls are fluorescing bright red (Reich et al, 2007).…”

“…The use of TLC has been adapted to more sophisticated techniques that allow for better quantification of oligosaccharides. These include high performance-TLC (HPTLC) which is a rapid and cost-effective method that offers a high sensitivity of analysis and produces reproducible results [ 65 ]. The use of HPTLC also requires the use of a small amount of sample, which means that MOS produced will not be wasted during their analysis [ 65 ].…”

“…These include high performance-TLC (HPTLC) which is a rapid and cost-effective method that offers a high sensitivity of analysis and produces reproducible results [ 65 ]. The use of HPTLC also requires the use of a small amount of sample, which means that MOS produced will not be wasted during their analysis [ 65 ]. HPTLC works on the same principle as normal TLC, having a solvent mobile phase that moves along the stationary phase due to capillary action, which helps the analytes that have a lower affinity for the stationary phase to move faster along the plate than those with a higher stationary phase affinity which move slower along with the plate.…”
