Exploring the temporal and spatial effects of city size on regional economic integration: Evidence from the Yangtze River Economic Belt in China

The energy-saving and low-carbon development model is one of the important symbols of high-quality economic development. This article attempts to study the environmental effects of green finance from both theoretical and empirical perspectives, that is, to test whether green finance policies contribute to achieving energy conservation and emission reduction. This article is based on provincial panel data from 2007 to 2020 in China and constructs a dynamic spatial Durbin model to examine the impact of green finance on environmental pollution and energy intensity. The results indicate that (1) green finance can achieve a dual effect of energy conservation and emission reduction simultaneously and has a significant promoting effect on energy conservation and emission reduction in neighboring regions. This conclusion is still valid after conducting robustness tests. (2) The energy-saving and emission-reduction effects of green finance exhibit significant regional heterogeneity, indicating that the performance of green finance is more outstanding in the eastern region with a higher level of economic development. (3) Mechanism testing has found that green finance can achieve energy-saving and emission-reduction effects through four channels: environmental regulation, credit allocation, enterprise profits, and enterprise innovation. Therefore, in order to further promote high-quality economic development, we need to build a comprehensive and multi-level green finance system, enrich the green finance policy toolbox, and smooth the transmission channels of green finance to promote green and stable economic development.

Research on the Impact of Heterogeneous Environmental Regulation on the Coordinated Development of China’s Water–Energy–Food System from a Spatial Perspective

Water resources, energy, and food are fundamental resources for ensuring human social development. The coordinated development of these resources contributes to improving the quality of the social environment, promoting harmony between humans and nature, and achieving economic, social, and ecological sustainability. This study utilizes panel data from 30 provinces in China from 2003 to 2020. Using a coupled coordination degree model, the coupling coordination degree of the Water–Energy–Food (WEF) system is calculated, and the spatiotemporal evolution and social network connections of WEF coupling coordination are analyzed. The spatial Durbin model is employed to investigate the spatial spillover effects of heterogeneous environmental regulation on the coordinated development of the WEF system. The mechanism model is used to explore the pathways through which heterogeneous environmental regulation influences the coordinated development of the WEF system. The results of this study demonstrate that the coupling coordination index of China’s provincial-level WEF system has shown a steady upward trend, except for a slight decline in a few years. Over the research period, there has been a significant improvement in regional coupling coordination levels. There are large differences in the level of WEF coupling coordination among different regions, with a distribution pattern of south > north and east > west. Both formal and informal environmental regulations have significant positive effects on the coupling coordination development of the WEF system, as well as significant positive spatial spillover effects. Formal environmental regulation has a stronger impact compared to informal environmental regulation. Foreign direct investment and industrial structural upgrading are important pathways for environmental regulation to promote the coordinated development of the WEF system. Both formal and informal environmental regulations can promote the coordinated development of the WEF system by facilitating foreign direct investment and industrial structural upgrading. This study not only provides important scientific evidence and decision-making references for policymakers in formulating environmental regulation policies but also offers new evidence support for the theory of regional development disparities.

Impact Mechanism of Renewable Energy Technology Innovation on Carbon Productivity Based on Spatial Durbin Model

Given the threats to international energy security and the restructuring of energy sources in various countries, China faces the dual challenge of achieving the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. To promote a reduction in carbon emissions and enhance carbon productivity, it is crucial to innovate renewable energy technology for long-term, low-carbon transformational development. This paper identifies the key factors that affect carbon productivity through pathway analysis and quantitatively examines the direct and spatial spillover impacts of technological advancements in renewable energy using the spatial Durbin model. Finally, this study verifies the pathways through which innovations affect carbon productivity by combining them with the spatial mediation model. The results indicate that innovations in renewable energy technologies significantly enhance carbon productivity. The indirect effects of regional spillover are even more pronounced.
