Exploring the uncertainty in capacity estimation at roundabouts

Abstract: Purpose In gap-acceptance theory the critical and the followup headways have a significant role in determining roundabout entry capacities which in turn depend on circulating flow rates under a specified arrival headway distribution. Calculation considers single mean values of the gap-acceptance parameters, neglecting the inherent variations in these random variables and providing a single value of entry capacity. The purpose of this paper is to derive the entry capacity distribution which accounts for the var… Show more

“…Several literature studies emphasized the importance of the calibration and validation process that allows micro simulation tools to provide reliable output [15]. This methodology enables comparison of data calculated through simulation for the specific road environment investigated with values estimated by meta-analytical models in the literature.…”

“…That model is the general one created by Hagring [12,13], which uses Equation (1) to determine the capacity of the arm to vary with the conflicting flow, Q c . Specifically, the parameters T c = critical headway (s), T f = follow-up headway (s), and ∆ = the minimum headway of major traffic flow (s) used in Equation (1) were estimated by Giuffrè et al [14]:…”

“…Recognizing the stochastic nature of time headways, capacity models should treat them as distributions. Additionally, specifying the probability distribution of headways between vehicles in each major stream is crucial for gap acceptance-based capacity models [67,68]. Figure 5 shows the most commonly used single-lane roundabout gap acceptance capacity models globally for the purpose of comparison [66,[69][70][71][72][73].…”
